Man Of The House

Andamion Murataj’s debut feature, titled Man of the House, officially entered production on 15 February. Before embarking on the making of this film, Murataj worked as a co-writer and co-producer on the feature film The Forgiveness of Blood, directed by Joshua Marston, for which he earned a Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the Berlinale.

Murataj’s effort centres on Fran, a complex character who, although born a woman, lives the celibate life of a man in the tradition of the Albanian Sworn Virgins. In order to become a mother to her young and motherless niece, Fran has to make the hard choice of either continuing to maintain the status of her “manhood,” or give it all up and reconnect with the feminine maternal feelings that she has been suppressing for so long.

“My aim is to set in motion a film that tells the heart-wrenching tale of an authentic character, who has to confront her gender identity and undergo tremendous reverse shifts in a rapidly changing Albanian society,” Murataj told Cineuropa.

Man of the House is shooting in and around Tirana. It is the first feature-length project made in co-operation with the newly-funded Tirana Film Office and the Creative Industries Agency of Tirana Municipality. 

After receiving the backing of the Albanian National Center of Cinematography, the production outfit Lissus Media has managed to secure the broadest international collaboration to date for an Albanian film. Italy’s Palomar, Austria’s Ellly Films, Greece’s Akran along with a group of other Balkan companies such as Croatia’s Peglanje Snova, Kosovo’s Thumbs Up and North Macedonia’s Manufactura. The film is also receiving support from Eurimages, and will be one of the first green-certified Albanian productions.

MAN OF THE HOUSE fokusohet tek Frani, një personazh kompleks, i cili ndonëse ka lindur grua, jeton jetën beqare të një burri në traditën e një virgjëreshe të betuar shqiptare në ditët e sotme. Për t'u bërë nënë e mbesës së së saj të vogël e cila është pa nënë, Frani duhet të bëjë zgjedhjen e vështirë ose të vazhdojë të mbajë statusin e një "burrërie", ose të heqë dorë nga të gjitha dhe të rilidhet me ndjenjat femërore të nënës të cilat ajo i ka ndrydhur për një kohë të gjatë.

MAN OF THE HOUSE është filmi debutues për Andamion Murataj, veprat e mëparshme të të cilit si skenarist dhe bashkëprodhues i filmit artistik Forgiveness of Blood (2011) i dhanë atij një Ari të Argjendtë për skenarin më të mirë në Berlinale.

Il lungometraggio albanese MAN OF THE HOUSE diretto da Andamion Murataj è entrato in produzione lunedì 15 febbraio 2023.

L'UOMO DI CASA è incentrato su Fran, un personaggio complesso che, sebbene nato donna, vive la vita celibe di un uomo nella tradizione delle vergini giurate albanesi di oggi. Per diventare madre della giovane nipote senza madre, Fran deve fare la difficile scelta se continuare a mantenere lo status di "virilità" o rinunciare a tutto e riconnettersi con i sentimenti materni femminili che ha soppresso per così lungo.

MAN OF THE HOUSE è il primo lungometraggio di Andamion Murataj, i cui lavori precedenti come cosceneggiatore e coproduttore del lungometraggio Forgiveness of Blood (2011) gli sono valsi un Orso d'argento per la migliore sceneggiatura alla Berlinale.

"Il mio obiettivo è quello di mettere in moto un film che racconti la storia straziante di un personaggio autentico, che deve confrontarsi con l'identità di genere e subire enormi cambiamenti inversi in una società albanese in rapido cambiamento". afferma il regista.

Il film è girato a Tirana e dintorni e ha trovato il sostegno di Tirana Film Office e l'Agenzia per le industrie creative del Comune di Tirana.

MAN OF THE HOUSE è anche una produzione albanese all'avanguardia certificata per la produzione verde.
